Learn more about tile

Come in and find out what we can do for you

Let’s take a moment and allow us to inform you about this popular and diverse floor and wall covering option. Tile is found in two main forms, ceramic /porcelain and stone. We also offer access to a very wide array of mortars, adhesives, grouts, and trim accessories for tile applications. We offer an extremely diverse selection of tile for walls and floors.

There are several variations in construction, hardness, durability, and style within each of the two main types. Let’s look into some of these in more detail.

Ceramic tile

Tiles are made from clay, which once shaped and dried, are fired in a kiln at very hot temperatures. This process hardens the tiles, creating “bisque” which can then be glazed and fired a second time. Tiles can also be used unglazed, although the color range is limited to the natural shades of the clay.

Tiles have been a popular material for interior and exterior decoration for thousands of years. They come in all shapes and sizes, colors and glazes and can be used plain, decorated or as part of a mosaic. Tiles are a popular choice of flooring due to their aesthetic appeal, as well as their durability and easy care.

A properly installed ceramic tile floor will outperform and outlast nearly any other floor covering product created for the same application. Tile resists stains, odors and dirt and can be cleaned with a damp mop or common household cleaners. Grade III and Grade IV glazed ceramic tiles are extremely scratch resistant. You never have to worry about a cut or tear like you do with other floor coverings.

Modern technologies have added to the range of shades, finishes and shapes available. In addition, there has been a resurgence of more traditional looks with terracotta and other natural unglazed finishes.

Additional benefits of tile include:

  • Cleanliness: Environmentally friendly, ceramic tile is manufactured using natural materials and does not retain odors, allergens or bacteria.
  • Versatility: Modern manufacturing technology has created a virtually limitless number of colors, sizes, styles, shapes and textures that can add rich beauty and character to any room in your home.
  • Fire Resistance: Tile doesn’t burn or emit toxic fumes. Even hot kitchen pans or skillets can’t scorch or melt the surface of glazed ceramic tile!
  • Water Resistance: Tile has a dense body that permits little or no moisture accumulation in interior.

Tile is a timeless, luxurious and durable flooring choice that offers a unique opportunity for self-expression because of its detail, flexibility and sheer beauty.

Porcelain tile

Similar to ceramic tile but slightly stronger with more detailed coloring, offering high-definition images. Some manufacturers achieve a wide range of beautiful colors by mixing color pigment in with the clay. Porcelain tile offers superior strength for heavy commercial use as well as residential applications. The rugged surface texture and matte finish of the unglazed tiles give them good “slip resistant” qualities for use in wet areas.

Porcelain tiles are made up of special clays and minerals similar to those found in china ware. The special clays allow the product to be fired at extreme temperatures (2500 degrees F) resulting in a denser and harder body than most other tiles. They are highly stain resistant and strong. They come with a plain, rough, or polished finish. The combination of beauty and durability makes them ideal for heavy commercial and residential installations.

Descriptions of various popular tiles

Porcelain Tile
Porcelain tiles are made up of special clays and minerals similar to those found in china ware. The special clays allow the product to be fired at extreme temperatures (2500 degrees F) resulting in a denser and harder body than most other tiles. They are highly stain resistant and strong. They come with a plain, rough, or polished finish. The combination of beauty and durability makes them ideal for heavy commercial and residential installations.

Quarry Tiles
These are unglazed tiles made from natural clays and shale. Their colors are usually limited to earthtones, ranging from red to a light tan, although some manufacturers offer a wider color range by adding color pigments to the clay. Their body is both thick and dense, making them a popular choice for both heavy commercial and residential installations. Their surface generally has good slip resistant qualities.

Mosaic Tiles
Mosaic tiles are small tiles, less than 6 square inches in size. They come mounted on perforated paper sheets or latex mesh for easy installations. They are usually very dense products that are tough and highly stain resistant. Mosaics are ideal for shower floors because their small size gives them the flexibility to follow the contour of the floor as it slopes to the drain. The numerous grout joints also aid in slip resistance.

Unglazed Tiles
Superior strength for heavy commercial use as well as residential. The rugged surface texture and matte finish of the unglazed tiles give them good “slip resistant” qualities for use in wet areas.

Floor Tiles
These tiles have the sufficient strength, impact and abrasion resistance to withstand weight and foot traffic. All of our floor tiles are rated for any residential use most heavy commercial applications. If the substrate is strong enough to support the weight, floor tiles may also be used on walls and counter tops.
